I’m a Ph.D. student who studies ant ecology and whose first love is teaching. I also love cooking, doing art, climbing, running and sewing. How does one have time for all of these hobbies, you ask? Well, if you’re me, you never get around to doing them or you do none of them well, that’s how. I’d like to change that though. Lately my interest in cooking has turned into more of an obsession and I’ve been craving a creative outlet for my culinary escapades.
The title of this blog reflects my immaturity and silliness. I recently learned that in some parts of the world, a recipe book is known as a “cookery book,” and couldn’t get enough of it! Thus, ‘cookery bookery’ was a shoe-in for a title. This blog is mostly meant to be a recipe journal and an inspiration for me to cook new things, but I’ll be happy if someone else gets inspired by the posts! I’m forever trying to be a healthier eater so I expect to write about recipes that incorporate fresh fruits, vegetables, grains, beans, and lean meats when possible. That said, I’m sure I’ll also get the itch to bake yummy things filled with sugar and butter from time to time and write about those too!
My food inspirations are pretty varied. I’m originally from Alabama, but I currently live in Davis, CA. My mom, who is from Missouri, did most of the cooking when I was growing up, so while there were some southern influences, we mostly ate traditional midwestern meals. Since moving to California I’ve developed an appreciation for dishes featuring fresh fruits and vegetables and because my boyfriend is half-Armenian and grew up in the Middle East, I’ve been trying out a lot of recipes from that region lately. My cooking repertoire is a bit schizophrenic to say the least! That should at least keep things interesting!
